Austria 1986: Kurt Waldheim, who was secretary general of UN for nine years, runs as the ÖVP‘s candidate for the office of President. At the same time, gaps in Waldheim´s sugarcoated biography regarding the Second World War period are coming to light. Ruth Beckerman accompanies the dramatic campaign with her video camera, documenting both rising resistance and anti-Semitic attacks. In THE WALDHEIM WALTZ, she now analyses the collapse of the Austrian self-delusion of having been the first victim of the Nazis; with archive footage and her own material. The mechanisms for mobilising feelings of hatred are being demonstrated based on current developments.
