More than 40 years ago, Mboro was commissioned to search for the head of the Tanzanian resistance fighter Mangi Meli in Germany and return it to his home country. Mangi Meli was hanged by German colonialists in 1900. Subsequently, they shipped his head to Germany for "racial research". In Phoenix’s Last Song the viewer is presented with the legend of the paradisiacal bird who descends to earth in order to die. Her words are a call to think and live against the patriarchal, capitalist and colonial power structures that define the world as we know it. The text draws on the work of feminist thinkers like Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, Simone de Beauvoir and Emma Goldman, and look at the ways in which institutions like the bourgeois family or state education inscribe the child within these power structures. Against this background, Phoenix’s Last Song opens a space to imagine how a new world may arise out of a burning of the old.… >>>

The film starts in a post-dystopic Canada after climate crises, wars and the after effects of the large-scale colonial project have now destroyed the land. When Indigenous people are left behind after a massive exodus by primarily privileged white settlers who have moved to Mars, the original inhabitants of this land cope by trying to restore and rehabilitate the beautiful planet they belong to. Starring Lacey Hill, Cherish Violet Blood, and Elwood Jimmy, these three Two-Spirit people describe the reclamation projects they are a part of. Tinged with bitterness at colonization, these hopeful people are also wary of the possibility of the colonizers returning after all is cleaned up.… >>>
