“An elephant's bone to stir food, a feather to catch winged termites at night, eight butterflies, a rope made from fragrant roots, 150 meters of exposed but not yet developed film destined for the Ministry of Colonies…” The list of loot taken to Belgium during a colonial expedition in the northeast of Congo between 1911 and 1913 is thousands of items long. Additional film footage from this expedition illustrates the underlying colonial system of oppression and exploitation. Sarah Vanagt creates a public but still intimate setting in which young people in Brussels, with many different backgrounds and horizons, examine and re-interpret these historic documents. In a playful and performative way, they reveal the condescending and discriminating colonial mindset.
