The “fight-or-flight” reaction is a bodily state which originates in an acute stress situation. This sort of experience can be defining and cause lasting trauma. So, what to do in the moment when fear and disorientation suddenly strike? Fight or flight? Memories migrate to the new home. Parents try to pass fragments of their culture on to their children, who themselves initiate rituals and customs. The staggering identities require courage and care to satisfy their parents’ and their own expectations. Especially women from the Arabic diaspora struggle with this process, because obedience is regularly expected from them in conservative families. An autonomous sexual orientation can be a taboo in the family. However, not only parents have expectations of their children. They, too, often struggle to accept when parents enter unexpected life-paths. A program that is dedicated to the intergenerational search for meaning, identity and localization. (Afsun Moshiry)
