Project Presentation: Visual Narratives Laboratory

(kleines BALi, KulturBahnhof Kassel)

In the pilot program of the Ministry of Science and Education – the “Regional Excellence Initiative” in Poland – Film School Łódź received a grant in 2019 for the establishment of a modern, multimedia “Visual Narratives Laboratory”. The main task of the laboratory is the production of experimental artistic works and attempts to create new visual language in the context of contemporary digital media. Within its framework vnLab undertakes creative and scientific exploration of the field of narrative-related technologies, such as cinematic VR, stereoscopy, film essay, interactive documentary, digital multi-media publishing, and other visual forms. The creation of the vnLab originates from the recognition that the digital revolution in media is not only a fact of life but is increasingly affecting the field of artistic practice. It is intended as an entry into a new sphere of exploration within the Lodz Film School’s areas of successful art education and practice: film, theater, and photography. Within 6 studios of vnLab dedicated to different fields of artistic practice, technology, or research creative teams of artists and/or researchers (invited or selected in open calls) develop works that explore contemporary ways of storytelling and conduct research in the areas of a.o.: audience, user experience, production process or the impact of the works produced within the Laboratory. As part of the presentation at the Kassel Dokfest, the Interactive Narratives Studio and the Essay Film Studio will introduce themselves.
