junges Dokfest: Your Performance

The topics of self-presentation in public spaces, self-image and ideal image, along with their associations to young people's own self-awareness, are not only to be found in the cinematic work of professional documentary filmmakers: they also find expression in various youth media cultures.
In the following short films, the viewer is confronted with images which are at times refined, at times staged, and at times also irritating, evidence of the problematic field in question. In this respect, the filmmakers shed light on both the limits of documentary film and the fringe areas of young lives.

Satellites

Satellites

Images of an enigmatic fainting ritual amongst teenagers. A YouTube trend which on the big screen is transformed into a meditation on the social cosmos of adolescence. On poses, gestures and physical contact, on letting oneself go and, at times, being let down.

The Contest

The Contest

KONKURS sequences film material which was captured at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2010. In calm shots, filmmaker Jakub Cuman concentrates at first on the emotions of the participants shortly before their performances, before then letting an unorthodox interplay between image and sound unfold. Among other things, this short film opens a discussion about aspects of artistic competition against the backdrop of the familiar television aesthetic of countless casting shows.

Apnoe

Apnoe

On the surface, APNOE describes one family's daily routine. The protagonists have considerable problems in coping with everyday life though. Confronted with weightlessness, the family framework begins to teeter and their hierarchical structure starts to dissolve. With a fine sense for irony and slapstick, filmmakers Harald Hund and Paul Horn reduce spatial relations and the concept of normality to absurdity.

Through Ellen's Ears

Through Ellen's Ears

Ellen is eleven years old and deaf. As she is set to change schools soon, Ellen has to choose between an institution for children who can hear and one for children who are hearing-impaired, a step that will have a decisive effect on the young girl's everyday life. Director Saskia Gubbels accompanies Ellen in her attempts to keep her dreams intact in spite of her handicap. With its moving combinations of sound and image, the film immerses itself in a world without hearing and treats the contemporary topic of inclusion in the process.

Satellites

Satellites

SATELLITES shows images of a puzzling blackout ritual which has spread far and wide among adolescents thanks to youtube. The poses, gestures and touches involved are at the center of attention. Bodies are liberated from the "bodiless" space of the internet and embedded in the social context of the cinema in order to pose questions concerning current media portrayals of the corporeal, and the divide between the self and worlds both public and private.
