A Portrait of the Artists as Themselves

The point of view changes, now the camera is turned around and focuses on the artists. The camera lens captures and reveals their inner life, analyses the past and looks into the future. However, the camera functions in two ways: first as mirror, but also as a surface that projects the expectations and demands of society and “the others". The ego collides with conformity and cliché. Five self-portraits, localizations and revelations for an imaginary audience.

This Man

This Man

Through a series of images and declarative statements, the portrait of a man is constructed. However, the artificial delivery of the voice-over narration and the illusion of stillness created by the video suggest that what is being seen and heard should not be taken at face value. As such, the viewer is asked to consider, and perhaps question, the truth in biographies.

InsideOut

InsideOut

A journey into the dark depths of the YouTube jungle, a patchwork of fragments from the lives of the most diverse set of people. The characters of INSIDEOUT reveal their thoughts, dilemmas and crises in this open forum as if they were in a confessional. We are led to wonder about what makes them open up so intimately and who they really are addressing.

An intimate piece that combines personal subjectivity with the clinical objectivity of medical reports, challenging the very notions of these categories. And a deep reflection on the relation of "abnormal individuals" to instances of authority such as the state, the law and psychiatry.

Adele 1

Adele 1

This video would actually be perfect for youtube: Kurdwin Ayub sits in front of her laptop, speaks directly in to the camera by way of introduction and says that now she wants to sing a song that fits her current situation well. The tune is the love song Someone Like You from Adele. In contrast to the countless cover versions on youtube though, Kurdwin Ayub doesn't use the song to display her vocal virtuosity but instead soon loses herself in lines, tones and emotions, only to end up staring straight ahead in resignation.
