Das kalte Eisen

How does one measure society's sense of security? In contrast to the situation in America the firearms debate rages in Germany too, affecting even people who have nothing to do with guns. Hardy Schober has hardly ever thought of personal safety, at least until his daughter Jana was killed during the school shooting at Winnenden. To save others from similar torment, Hardy fights to tighten up firearms laws. In contrast to him are people who, for generations, have kept and cherished their guns. One of these is Ralf Merkle, gunsmith and enthusiastic marksman. He doubts whether society would be safer with heightened firearms laws and fears for his liberty and existence. Between gun controls, shooting matches and scientific studies, the film reveals in a very personal light the difficulty of getting your life back on track after a tragedy that still leaves unanswered questions.
