University Portrayal

Every year, the Kassel Dokfest presents (independent from the selected works from the official competition) a film school from another European country. For this purpose a few of the students of the respective university are together with their professors invited to Kassel to present their latest works. Subsequently to the screenings, discussions offer the audience the possibility to talk to both the lecturer and the young talents. The audience is able to extend its knowledge about European film, teaching models at film schools in other European countries and to establish mutually important contacts.

In 2010 Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing / France), in 2011 the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (Czech Republic), in 2012 the University of art and design (Geneva /Switzerland), in 2013 the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Austria) and in 2014 the Academy of Fine Arts Palermo (Italy) were presented.

The Portrait of the 32nd edition is dedicated to Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Finland). Heikki Ahola, lecturer for film editing, will present together with some of his students a compilation of nine short films consisting of the latest works of the University, most of them German festival premieres.

In total, about 16.500 Students are studying at Metropolia. As 15 out of 67 study-programs are held in English, there are with 900 students from 90 different countries also a lot of foreign students.

The Degree Program in Film and Television Film and Television trains BA students specializing in Image and Editing, Sound, Production Management, Scriptwriting or Television and Radio Production. The four-year studies consists of practical exercises and theory, including general studies as well.
The structure of studies are mainly project-based. The first year focuses in documentary storytelling.
Both Film and TV- as well as TV and Radio-production accepts approximately 20 students yearly through 3 to 5-day evaluation exams. There is no tuition for the degree program. In the last 10 years students have produced more than 200 short documentaries and many of them have been awarded at international film festivals.

The degree program also produces fiction short films and occasionally feature length documentaries. The degree program collaborates closely with the professional field and client works are part of the study plan.

Helsinki Metropolia UAS is a full member of CILECT- The International Association of Film and Television Schools.
