Avatar

Thursday, November 12th 2015 AT 22:15 h, Großes BALi

The boundary between fiction and reality has dissolved, the real and the virtual can no longer be distinguished. Where in this digitized world can we still experience „reality“ and the real thing? This program evolves around alternate realities, the world of gaming, online communication and communities. The avatar functions as artificial body, as abstraction, proto- and stereotype which investigates the ethical and philosophical questions of the digital age.

PLANET Σ

PLANET Σ

2,2 billion years ago, the Earth was entirely covered in ice. The average temperature was about -50°C and underwater volcanoes were still active. PLANET ∑, is the creation of an entire world in that icy prehistorical landscape where cold and heat prevail. The slow motion camera captures how gigantic and microscopic creatures come to life.

Utopia 1.0: Post-Neo-Futurist-Capitalism in 3D!

Utopia 1.0: Post-Neo-Futurist-Capitalism in 3D!

An exploration of the remnants of a formerly thriving virtual 3D world, and an investigation of its susceptibility to the same economic pitfalls that plague our “real” world. Our guide navigates this strange, abandoned landscape seeking to understand the socio-economic desires of its residents, who built this community-generated 3D world. What was it they chose to build; what remains? Is it possible to imagine a new world or are we destined to continuously replicate our existing world?

Oneiria

Oneiria

Unpredictable behavior from technology is often perceived as negative. These glitches however, a.k.a. "the ghost in the machine", can be a starting point to expand the possibilities of image production in the digital age. ONEIRIA uses the method of data-moshing and works with found footage in different formats such as digital HD, VHS, Super 8. The specific aesthetics of these formats are literally used as paint to create abstract, dreamlike landscapes.

in between identities

in between identities

We are following avatars into a virtual world. Choreographed by the artist, they try to break free of the patterns, stretch the boundaries, and overcome the algorithm. In the end we become part of the game with its own stimulating identity. These strange moments raise our curiosity and trigger intimate desires.

Immortality, home and elsewhere

Immortality, home and elsewhere

Based on the premise that our lives are a summation of all the information we consume and process, the film constructs a theory of immortality, a meditation on the potential role of the individual in the imaginary event of our individual or collective death. Can we even imagine the end of the world? Drawing from mans fascination with ruin Sasha Litvintseva examines a possible collapse of history and the end of all potential futures. The camera is playing with the uncanny familiarity we gain with spaces through mediated means such as mainstream cinema as well as through the reproduction of the real world with virtual means in streetview programs. This virtual experience may not quite compare to the real thing yet, but the mediated virtual experience carries the same indexical value as the mediated real thing.
