The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul

The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul

Adorned in pink sequins, little girls from across a divided, war-torn Ukraine audition to play the role of 1994 gold medal-winning figure skater Oksana Baiul. The tears of joy of the then 16 year-old united the troubled country and became a symbol for the modern Ukraine. The camera witnesses how history and current events correlate and interact.

20 Handshakes for Peace

20 Handshakes for Peace

I remember the handshake very clearly. My dad recorded the ceremony on video and would play it over and over again. He could not believe what had happened. In fact, none of us could. One time he threw his shoe at the TV and shouted so loud, the next-door neighbors complained about him. 20 HANDSHAKES FOR PEACE is a close and detailed analysis of this specific scene, combined with an interview with Edward Said.

Eyrie

Eyrie

Stephen Connolly documents a visit to commemorative architecture built by the communist party in Bulgaria. This once was a space for people to gather and is now empty and abandoned. The action taken by the artist at the center of the work suggests an exploration as a space for play and speculation, displacing the insistent materiality of the site and the reverence of the ruin.

Figure

Figure

It is white and windy all around. A gigantic figure emerges from behind the snow curtain and hits the road. It passes towns, villages, houses, to land on top of a hill, next to spiders, saints and bumper cars. FIGURE is a surreal tale about creating myths, about religious kitsch, and about the desire for greatness. Who is our protagonist? The world's largest sacral miniature park resident. A gigantic contradiction.
