The image makes the music – forms and expressions of VJing
VJs of the DokfestLounge are talking about their works
In conversation with: VJ A-li-ce (Paris), Johannes Timpernagel (Berlin) and Mo (Kassel). Hosts: Jessica Manstetten and Jan Bode (selection committee DokfestLounge)
The birth of VJing is in the early 1990s. Before, light jockeys would cause crowds to go wild. We know however great the music, without the right lighting there is no chance for party atmosphere. But what about visuals? How are they different from just lights? They enhance a DJ’s audio performance, adding a visual component. It is claimed that VJs are just like automatic visualisers, but others call what they do a “proper art form” that deserves to be in exhibitions and film programs. One thing is clear: Pictorial visualisations can transport meaning to viewers beyond what the music alone might give them.
We want to discuss the experiences and views on these issues, what “good” visualisation is and what it can do, why it is so much connected to electronic music and what the VJs motivations and means of production are.
