From One to Another
FROM ONE TO ANOTHER is about the manifold forms of translation one is asked to perform in alien or unfamiliar surroundings. Translation does not merely refer to language, but to the quite fundamental adventure of perceiving the world from somebody else's perspective. The pleasure of this program lies in the change of scenes each of the films provide, and also in the manifold experiments with the cinematic form, which is itself a form of translation, or an expression of something for which words fail us.
alva noto . uni acronym
Acronyms are shortened names like CIA or BMX, but as autonomous names the combination of three letters is also a short form of musicality. Musician and artist Alva Noto puts them into alphabetical order and plays them in an audiovisual music video. From AAA to zip: a rhythmical world of familiar signifiers.

Rooms with a View
Léo Zakra-Lepage visits a migrant dormitory in his neighborhood and asks the residents to tell him what they see when they look out the window. A simple, yet precise exercise in changing perspectives, and an eye-opener at that. The less there is to see, the more we hear about things that were once seen but are now out of sight; things that are desperately missed or that are still easy to remember, even after many years. What one sees from a window depends on who's looking out.

Looking at Looking, Comprehending Comprehension
Veronika Reichl's baffling yet totally serious project is dedicated to the graphic visualisation of philosophical concepts. Her Heidegger film tackles the central term "Auslegung", or "interpretation", and achieves not only a form of understanding but also something like "the beauty of a thought". (Veronika Reichl's Hegel film is part of the program "Heading for Confrontation".)

3 Voices
An off-screen voice starts telling a story. In the image we see a man and a woman sitting on chairs who appear to be translating what's being said. Three voices, three languages, the same story. A childhood memory of an escape to another country, of slowly waking up in an alien surroundings and of learning a new language as if the old language had been false. Soon enough the three voices overlap, then again they all seem to be listening to a fourth voice that we don't hear. Whose story is this and what is its "primary language"?

Here, There and Lisboa
HERE, THERE AND LISBON is a cinematic poem about exile, a story told in the dark, when our eyes have to make do with a flickering light and when our hearing is sharpened instead to pinpoint. As the title suggests, the film seems to be about three places connected by the story of a journey. Along the way the voice fluently switches between languages, telling about the curious intimacy one encounters abroad once one has given up the idea of a "home". The traveler's only home, it seems, is the body, as familiar and complex to him as a city he never left.

Tract

Der Rücken der Dirigentin
Conducting is a complex sign language. With few and concentrated images it is the center of this film’s focus. The female conductor’s whole body communicates while coordinating the musicians. In a second level the film shows the hand movements as a written language of images. IIntermittent titles offer information and new perspectives.
