Vito
He was there and there were consequences – on June 27, 1969, a police raid in a New York City gay bar took a surprising turn: the Gay Rights Movement was born. Over the course of the next twenty years, Vito Russo became one of the most inspiring and direct activists of the Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual and Trans-Community (LGBT) in the fight for equal rights. The charismatic pioneer was in addition an extremely talented writer. In “The Celluloid Closet” he investigated the construction of homosexuality in film, long before the advent of “Gender Studies,” and revealed how it became one of the roots of homophobia.
