Out In The Open

It happens out in the open, before everyone’s eyes, but no one really notices. Some short media reports, deep shock, condolences and then it is over. What happens afterwards is no longer of interest. What do investigations, reports, or statements achieve? Who cares about the victims and survivors of racist violence decades later? They are left alone with their memories, and remembrance, trying to live a normal life between the attempt to understand, the need to commemorate and the hope for oblivion.

J.M. Mondésir

A whole housing project, which is transformed in to something more like an amphitheater, witnesses a crime. In 2002, Georges Mondesir dies after an encounter with the police. Different tenants and friends talk about Georges Mondesir, how he lived and how he died, and what they remember. Simultaneously the camera wanders around the neighborhood, carrying the question of how life will go on after this.

After the Fire

In 1992, seven-year-old Ibrahim Arslan survived a racially motivated arson attack on his family’s home in Mölln, in which three members of his family were killed. Fifteen years later, Ibrahim begins his search for clues: what happened back then? How are individual family members dealing with the consequences of the violence they experienced?
