Songs of Repression

Gloria Kino

The film follows the traces of abuse and violence in the German sect Colonia Dignidad, founded in 1961. Located in a paradisiacal landscape and renamed Villa Baviera in 1988, tourism is now flourishing with German “beer tent coziness”. But this semblance disguises a great trauma. Insensitive conversations, the film team gains the trust of many residents who talk about being humiliated but also of the complex entanglement as victim and perpetrator. A film about repression, denial, remorse and guilt.
