Against the Tide

Gloria Kino

In 2019, director Sobo Swobodnik visited his brother-in-law Thomas, who has been wanted as a left-wing terrorist since 1995 – after a failed arson attack on an empty Berlin deportation prison – and has gone into hiding in Venezuela. The film shows the protagonist’s modest everyday life and his transatlantic music project with the young Franco-German musician Mal Élevé on refugee policy in Europe. The idea of left-wing utopias is reflected against the background of the disastrous post-chavistic reality and the belief in social changeability through music.
