Life in Loop

(BALi, KulturBahnhof Kassel)

The axial precession, the vernal equinox, the zodiac: each determines a period intime, precisely calculated from the circular axis motion of the earth. Life in Loop: is time a circle, too? Or is it as science proposes, linear and progressive? Do the creatures of earth perceive time differently? The four films in this program name, show, and question the relationship between time and space, or they externalize themselves by making it experiential. While in MIGRANTS birds of passage traverse boarders in periodic unison, in EL CANTO DE LACRISÁLIDA people periodically withstand winter through the same labor, static, and enclosed. While THE PROBLEM OF THE HYDRA depicts how the freshwater polyp Hydra Vulgaris doesn’t age, EARTHEARTHEARTH makes palpable how the light of the sun just sparks one day, and dies out theother. In their search for food, they cross political borders – which are completely irrelevant to them – on a daily basis. Instead, the seek orientation along the large landscape formations, which in the Wadden Sea constantly move and shift in relation to each other. In the montage, the theme of the border is taken up and transferred into a temporal grid: a cut is made each second. Within this framework, an almost continuous movement is written with the aid of disparate shots: from approach to landing, from day to night, and from an agricultural environment to a dystopian, post-industrial setting.… >>>
