In Lebanon, domestic staff are not covered by labour law. Under the kafala system, the employer keeps the domestic worker’s passport for the duration of the contract. This opens the door to arbitrary action and abuse: Many domestic staff work more than twelve hours a day, six days a week. They are exploited, harassed and often mistreated.
