The Peruvian Central Railway transports minerals from the impassable high plateau of the Andes to the Pacific Ocean. Mining as the key to economic prosperity goes hand in hand with severe impacts on the land and the health of the people. On this cinematic train journey from the mountains to the lowlands, we meet people who are affected by the fatal consequences of the exploitation of mineral resources. While proud speeches of prosperity can be heard at the “Independence Day” celebrations, little of it reaches the people themselves. Voices for change are becoming stronger. (Sita Scherer)
