“We called for workers, and people came” (Max Frisch) – and with them came music. For the Turkish “guest workers” in what was then West Germany, songs published under labels like Türkofon or Türküola, which created a prosperous music industry, were a piece of home in a foreign land. Later, the songs became more critical, protesting against inhumane working conditions, and today, in rap and hip-hop, they deal with present-day Germany and life between two worlds. A dazzling kaleidoscope of a special chapter in German-Turkish history. (Anja Klauck)
