The Mother of All Lies

The so-called “Bread Riots” in Casablanca in 1981, in which around 600 people died, form the background for Asmae El Moudir's artful reconstruction of her own family's involvement in the events of that time. A lifelike replica of her own neighborhood, which she made together with her father, becomes the stage for a painful memoir that spares no one. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won two awards in the "Un Certain Regard" series. (Joachim Kurz)
