CN: Thematization of sexualized violence
What constitutes a community? Is it that which used to be, what is present or things that are not there and thus missing? Probably, it is a mix of all that. As the films compiled here show, it can for instance be the struggle for a better future, research into the past, coming together for a collective experience, or co-working and creating new elements in the process. As we sit in the cinema, we do not simply remain spectators. Being there makes us participants of the images and movements. However, each of us having their own personal perspective in this makes our imaginings of community very different. We need to discuss what was, what is, what is missing and what our community is actually made of. (Sarah Adam)
In April 2019, after the fall of President Omar al-Bashir, Sudanese from across the country make their way to Khartoum to demand civilian rule. BOND was made in close cooperation with the “Jugendforum Gröpelingen”, an open and politically active youth advisory board in Bremen. The setting of the film, the district of Gröpelingen, as a former location of the AG Weser Werft, is characterized by industry, labor and migration. Here the artist accompanies a group of young people on their search in state and private archives. They search for traces of their parents’ and grandparents’ generation and the local history of solidarity and empowerment. Images of intercultural protests, wild strikes and school squats in the 70s and 80s become film backdrops and props in BOND. They serve as a starting point for the young people to explore their history and their current positioning within society.
