Church Rock was once the most important uranium mining area in the world. But the promise of prosperity and progress quickly gave way to existential destruction. Affecting the Navajo Nation in the American Southwest, entire generations struggle with cancer, contamination of water and livestock. Long takes, apocalyptic black and white images, alienating elements create a surreal atmosphere in which the actual danger can only be guessed at. The activists, scientists and artists who speak up postulate this all the more insistently. (Anja Klauck)
