A series of attacks leaves a town in the Belgian Congo on edge. Few know whether the murders were committed by leopards or Anyoto, the “Leopard Men”. The secret society represents traditional values, and the colonial government knows how to exploit this. In 1933 a trial follows, which is the starting point of the film. To investigate the colonially distorted myth of the “Leopard Men”, Congolese director Kibushi uses an innovative mix of animation, reenactment and analog footage. A powerful, entertaining statement against European amnesia. (Sita Scherer)
