The program explores the relation between mankind and earth through the materialistic
complexities of the ground. From a post-human perspective that understands all matter as living
entities stones and mountains challenge our anthropocentric thinking. Engineering, technology,
and culture come into question as we observe the penetration of our earth’s crust. Lastly, the
underground sphere presents itself as a stage for speculative narratives of the future before
returning to ruins.
The film tells the situation of mountain rivers in a particular place in Japan. Inspired by Kafka’s “Excursion into the mountains” the filmmaker draws attention to the current environmental dilemma of including more-than-humans in political modes of commonality, solidarity and equally. Can the more-than-human subaltern speak, or shall one speak for them? He placed words of the story over the images to which they could rather literally refer. In the result a strange environmental interpretation of the writing appeared. His wife Dianna, with whom he built the space, moved back to Topeka a few years ago, but Ed chose to stay behind in his castle.… >>>

The film conjures up futuristic beings from an eerie smoke-filled landscape and the depths of the earth. It was shot in the vast, dark passages of Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset. The netherworld of chambers, carved out over deep time, once held remnants of lost civilizations, now foretell a future subterranean world, occupied by a species evolved from our environmentally challenged world. Part three of a trilogy of speculative films with text written by Mark von Schlegell.… >>>
