Workshop: A New Movement in Cinema
Goethes PostamD / FR 17.11. / 10:30 – 15:30 (Exclusive event)
There is a new cinema movement in Germany. In recent years, a variety of concepts for new spaces for the moving image have emerged. In Hamburg, for example, a "Centre of Audiovisual Cultures" was conceived in the context of the local cinematheque, a "Film House" was considered at a Munich symposium on the future of film and cinema culture, and in Frankfurt a concept for a "House of Film Cultures" was published by the LICHTER Film Festival. In Berlin, the Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V. is planning a new location and with its experimental cinema "Sinema Transtopia" the collective bi'bak has been testing a "new cinema in the transnational society" for several years – first in the Haus der Statistik at Alexanderplatz, now in an old industrial warehouse in Wedding. In Leipzig, the Cinémathèque will probably soon be able to move into its long-sought permanent home. And lastly, Stuttgart has already held a Europe-wide competition for a "House for Film and Media", the winning design of which is to be realised in the middle of the city centre by 2027.
After representatives of the aforementioned projects met for the first time in April 2023 at the Frankfurt Zukunft Deutscher Film conference, the Kassel Dokfest will bring them together again in Kassel in cooperation with the Frankfurt association "Lichter Filmkultur". This will help to consolidate joint learning processes. This time, the main focus will be on the visibility of the "New Cinema Movement" in the cultural and political public, on a possible structural connection and funding as a federal project. In the presence of the film and social scientist and author Dr. Morticia Zschiesche, who has dedicated herself to the future of film spaces for several years, the discussion will also focus on new perspectives, alliances and greater effectiveness of the projects.

Panel: Cinema, a place for tomorrow! What the cinema of the future can be
Goethes PostamD / FR 17.11. / 15:30 – 17:00 (Public event)
in coopration with Kongress Zukunft Deutscher Film / Lichter Filmkultur e.V.
The panel will open with a ten-minute input lecture by Gregor Maria Schubert entitled: "Contemporary cinema architecture. Best practice examples of newly built and converted cinemas".
The panel "Cinema, a place for tomorrow!" allows the representatives of the Filmhaus projects from Leipzig and Stuttgart – which are furthest advanced in their planning – to present themselves to the public. Together we will look at the planned projects. In addition to the question of the spatial concepts chosen, the main focus will be on the urban and cultural potential of both projects. What kind of connections are possible? How can the neighbourhood and its communities be opened up? What offerings are there or should there be? What can a critical examination of one's own role in a newly built or gentrified neighbourhood look like? Gabu Heindl, a renowned cinema architect responsible for several cinema (re)constructions and concepts in Vienna, will be joining the panel.
Daniel Danzer began working as an assistant director and then director at the theatre of the Staatstheater Stuttgart in 1988. After a series of productions in Germany, he transitioned into the film and television industry. Since 2011, he has been involved in the association, "Haus für Film und Medien Stuttgart, e.V.", which conceived and launched just such a house - he has been a member of the extended steering committee since 2018. The HFM was at last approved by the Stuttgart City Council in 2020 and is scheduled to open in 2028.
Gabu Heindl has been Professor and Head of the Department of Construction Economics and Project Development at the University of Kassel since autumn 2022. 2018 to 2021, she was Visiting Professor at Sheffield University with a research focus on Urban Commons. Unit Master at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA). She studied architecture in Vienna, Tokyo and at Princeton University and completed a PhD in philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. With her firm GABU Heindl Architektur, she is responsible, among other things, for the conversion of the Vienna Film Museum, the Stadtkino in the Künstlerhaus Wien and the Film Museum Collections.
Angela Seidel, a qualified cultural/media educator, can draw on more than 20 years of project and management experience in various cultural sectors and locations, one of whose core themes is visualisation work. These include, for example, social culture, contemporary music - jazz and film. The focus of her work is on the development of sustainable future perspectives for independent cultural institutions. As Managing Director of the Cinémathèque Leipzig from the end of 2012 until mid-2023, she is responsible for the development of a new visionary location for film cultural work in Leipzig - the FILMKUNSTHAUS LEIPZIG (AT) as a centre for film and media education.
Moderation:
Morticia Zschiesche studied theatre, film and television studies as well as journalism at the Free University of Berlin and earned her doctorate in sociology at the University of Heidelberg. She advises organisations on cultural and cinema funding as "next practice" and conducts accompanying scientific evaluations. She is an expert in the further development and communication of film and cinema culture, film and cinema policy and is particularly interested in reflecting on social constellations and perspectives on film aesthetics. For the Ministry of Science in Stuttgart, she worked on the Film Concept 2020. In 2022, she completed the first Cinema Concept for the city of Heidelberg and is currently advising the city of Mainz on how to safeguard its art house cinemas.
LICHTER Filmfest and Zukunft Deutscher Film congress:
Since 2008, the LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International has taken place every spring in the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. In addition to short and feature-length film competitions, the LICHTER presents regional, national and international film works as well as video art, VR and AR productions. In addition to the curated film series Zukunft Deutscher Film, a section of international film productions on a yearly changing theme such as Nature, Power and Change, and in 2023, Love, forms a central pillar of the festival programme.
In 2018, Edgar Reitz gave the impulse to discuss the future of German film in a differentiated way at a concurrent conference. In the process, with the Frankfurt Positions, around 100 filmmakers developed a concept that recommends substantial innovations in promotion and financing, vocational training and film education, distribution and cinema culture. With the follow-up conferences in 2022 and 2023, which increasingly addressed a European perspective, the LICHTER Filmfest followed its goal of establishing the Zukunft Deutscher Film congress, including the German film series Zukunft Deutscher Film, as a regular event.
