The future and what it holds is full of promise. What is possible in the world around us if we venture out there? But as soon as the future manifests itself in the physical present, this promising indeterminacy collapses. What incentive do we have to go out of our rooms? How does it feel when outside our own window a modern building promises new quality of life, but we can only watch? inside or outside (shells) is part of a larger project that addresses the architectural design of American tech companies with a special focus on their hermetic transparency. It looks at the way in which the services developed within those spaces accelerate the blurring of the interior and exterior in our personal spheres. The geodesic dome, echoed in the architecture of many tech headquarters, is examined as an iconic symbol of this alternative culture. Whereas Richard Buckminster Fuller, who popularized the domes, approached the world holistically in terms of food, energy, and housing, big tech companies seem to have lost much of that impetus.… >>>
