DokfestLounge

Audiovisual Performances

The DokfestLounge is the festival's nightly counterpart and we are happy, that this year it again has found a home in the Caricatura – Bar + Gallery at the KulturBahnhof and right in the middle of the geographical heart of the festival. We are especially happy about the increased number of submissions which made the expansion of the program of audio visual performances possible and which show a better overview of current trends in the field of performative media art.
This year for the first time the DokfestLounge is offering, next to the curatorial program, the possibility for all external and local artists, filmmakers and visitors to showcase and try out own VJ sets as well as playing together interactive and simultaneously on the separate screens of the location. And last but not least it's the 30. anniversary. That means: “Party on and there's no fox like an old fox!”.

Still und dunkel (Switzerland)

Wed. 13.11. 11:30 p.m.

Performance

Christoph Brünggel & Benny Jaberg

Disused factories, empty buildings and abandoned protection and support shelters. Once created by man and filled with life, now abondoned, quiet, dark. Attracted by memories of perishability  and  the longing for silent places in times of whirlwind speed and progress, the two artists and filmmakers Christoph Brünggel and Benny Jaberg are shooting film sequences before every STILL UND DUNKEL performces at those non-places.

In the following the recorded material is archived in an associative way and from performance to performance will be added to an increasingly growing pool, with which the VJ collective PIXELPUNX will work during the life performances. The visuals are characterized by a juxtaposition of analogies and contrasts of the individual places. In the performance a piece of particular music pays an additional homage to those locations. Transforming processes become real in the room, contrasting images appear and disappear shortly after. Here, two constants keep coming back: time and place – of which we can only influence one.

Pixelpunx (Switzerland)

Wed. 13.11. 11:30 p.m.

VJs

Producing live videos is the contention with an unrepeatable moment. It’s a spontaneous interpretation and reflection of an atmosphere. The work of Pixelpunx transforms the mood of the surrounding area into a digital wallpaper and expands the room. It’s the search of a visual translation. They revert to their huge archive, resulted from old computer games, now grown into a many-sided library of short loops from many kinds of moving images. Studied and worked on different fields (Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Architecture and New Media), the five members of Pixelpunx are using the rough material in unequal ways and create an individual expression.

Chrs Smthng (Berlin)

Beardy Earns & Broshuda (Kassel)

Wed. 13.11. 11:30 p.m.

DJs

For some years Beardy Earns and Broshuda have been working on colorful, sonic constructions in their sound laboratories in regard to their label Hollerback Records to fathom the borders between electronica, ambient and beats 2.0. From sample based sound collages to synthesizers, drum machines, circuit bending and field recordings, in the name of the acoustic research they except all means to extract new facetes for outdated terms like IDM and electronic music.

Steuerung Ø (Kassel)

Thu. 14.11. 11 p.m.

Tobias Böhm, Fabricius Clavée and David Okoampah

Performance

The Kassel based Trio Clavée, Okoampah and Böhm takes us to the world of Steuerung Ø, in which compositional conventions have no value and experimenting is the centre of the acoustic journey. Analog and granular synthesizers, water harp, theremine, tenori-on and chaos controllers accompany us on our way through a world of acoustic unique specimens, in which words and sounds are distorted and deconstructed into the individual parts. The granulate, that has come into being, consists of a language in which one might hear elements of Dada, Fluxus, Musique Unique and the current DJ culture.

His work COMBUSTION is a singular performance using electricity as the main source for the generation of sound and image. COMBUSTION is anti music and anti graphic, seeking the primitive core in visual and audio to extract only the essence of these sensory experiences. The performance is a constant research on the impact of image and sound in a synchronized and informed narration, as a sort of a blast Lost in Space.

Souki (Berlin)

Fri. 15.11. 00:30 a.m.

DJ

Grown up in Kassel, the soundenthusiast Souki discovered her passion for minimal music back in 2002 in Kassel's well known club A.R.M.. A few years later she decided to develop her own music supported by “Der Schmeisser“. Result of this collaboration was her first vinyl “4 faces“, which was licensed for time warp compilation 2009 (mixed and compiled by Marco Carola) and got raving feedback in the media. 2010 her track “Two Birds Records“ on its monthly apearing de:bug-CD. Currently she is living in Berlin, played already in all renowned clubs of the city from Golden Gate, Berghain Kantine to Kater Holzig and Tacheles as well as numerous international bookings in San Francisco, Brussels, Moscow, Prague, Sweden and Minsk. In fall 2013 her new EP “Spotlights“ will be released on [a]pendics.shuffles' label “adjunct audio”. Instead of mixing final tracks into each other she is producing her pumpy sound using single channels. The result is a creative performance with maximum pressure in the club. Actually Souki is working on music using weird and organic sounds packed in a deep and slow groove.

Vossy_ (Kassel)

Fri. 15.11. 00:30 a.m.

Markus Mehr & Stefanie Sixt (Augsburg)

Sat. 16.11. 11 p.m.

BCHIJ

Performance

Within BCHIJ Markus Mehr and Stefanie Sixt are exploring the phenomenon of faith and religion. BCHIJ is an audiovisual examination of the five biggest communities of faith: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism – taken as examples for religious groups. The piece is an audiovisual observation and an exploration. There is no right or wrong. It is a contemplation, seen from a neutral point of view. Allthough the five pieces are using visuals and sounds that are based on a similar language they develop an individual expression and the dividing lines between the religions back out. Stefanie Sixt has produced numerous experimental short films, music videos, conceptual visual arts, audiovisual live (dance) performances and video installations. Since 2010 she has been teaching at different universities of applied sciences. She won several awards and distinctions, her work was shown on festivals e.g. in Berlin), Dresden), Osnabrück (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden), Harare (Simbabwe) and was internationally exhibited at galleries and in museums. Markus Mehr had started making music back in the 80ies. His musical roots intitially are in rock music as can be heard on numerous album releases published under various band names and the pseudonym Aroma. After being on tour for years with the projects mentioned above, Mehr decided to take a musical new step, to release under his name. With the album “Lava“ published by Hidden Shoal Recordings in June 2010 he shows his love for sound sculptures, drone, experimental music and the artistic creation of sound. In January 2012 “IN” was published followed by the albums “ON” in July 2012 and “OFF” in Janurary  2013. All of them are reviewed worldwide.

Free Sausage (France/Switzerland)

Sat. 16.11. 00:00 a.m.

Charlie Mars & Steve Buchanan

Performance

FREE SAUSAGE is a no nonsense-nonsense farce mixing elements of Live, AV, comedy, dance, kitch tangos, massive noize and a bit of social panache. The unlikely team of Charlie Mars & Steve Buchanan combine their disparate (or rather desperate) respective talents and subject them to the cultural meat grinder. The subsequent results produce a rather colorful pastiche of contemporary art sausages in all their interesting (or not) variations. Imagine a musical comedy directed by Mel Brooks, choreographed by Jerome Bel with music by Merzbow! Is it comedy, dance, satire? Is it highbrow, lowbrow, eyebrow? Is it theater, a crime, is it a shame? It‘s sausage. Not just any sausage, but a FREE SAUSAGE! FREE SAUSAGE reflects the contradiction and paradox of contemporary life. Its meaningful, yet its not. It has much to say, yet nothing at all. Its serious, but nonsense. The sausage is free, but you must buy the Vacumn Cleaner! Steve Buchanan works as a composer, dancer, multi-instrumentalist and performer in the fields of music, dance and AV/Live. Charlie Mars is sometimes director, sometimes performer, videographer or TV presenter (2008 to 2010 he presented the program on Canal + "The movies made at home").

MAZE (Halle/Leipzig)

Sat. 16.11. 00:00 a.m.

VJs

Maze is a software which playfully combines shapes, colors and sounds. Within a short time audiovisual compositions are produced with MAZE on account of its generative design. MAZE does not intent to replace the creative human, but wants to become an interface, by means of which – like in a creative game – numerous options emerge, to change image and sound as desired, making it tangible by trying things out. At the moment MAZE is in the process of further development to an interactive installation and is supposed to be used as an instrument for sound therapy. In the DokfestLounge the team from Halle and Leipzig will use club visuals and will try to drive you, the dancing crowd, into ecstasy when beat and bass visually become one.

Johan Holm is a video artist and director. As a member of the Swedish VJ collective Vidiots he is working as a VJ also producing video mappings and installations. Skar (Hamburg)

Sat. 16.11. 00:00 a.m.

DJ

For Skar the material makes the music. Interesting changes in style and the clever mixture of old and new give his sets a special touch. Over the years the Hip-Hop-Head, that loves jazz and funk and is part of the Hamburg DJ crew “The Fingerprints”, has developed a keen sense for the right musical particularities which are often unconventional but never arbitrary. Since 1997 he also works as a DJ und event manager. Hip Hop, Bass, Breaks and House are his familiar genres. 2009 he went on air with the radio show “The Good Nightz”. Every Friday night from 10-11 p.m. he presents music of all kinds. During many years he and the Fingerprints successfully organized the series “The Finest Funk in Rap”, since 2010 every Friday he is a resident at Mandalay and among other things played at Elbjazz and Ruhr2010.
