Habitat

Wednesday, November 11th 2015 AT 20:00 h, Großes BALi

Architects, sociologists and city planners all have certain ideas about how we humans should or would prefer to live. But whether we just inhabit a place or are at home in it, is not only dependent on objective criteria. 4 films that deal with the personal living space of the human species. From village to city, from model-thinking to a reality in a model come to life. We move into the darkness and out into the spotlight. This filmprogram casts a humorous light on different concepts, realities and preconceptions of and about the human habitat.

Quantum.

Quantum.

A town observed from the hill facing it is treated as an architectural model illuminated by the lights of a home interior. The sounds cancel the distance of the shot, amplifying the details of places and actions lit up by beams of light. Places and actions appear as miniatures and are animated by the turning on and off of the lights in the room. The sounds of a wind band shift and double. The aria of an opera, deprived of voice, reverberates in the subtracted lights and landscape.

An Apparent Secret

An Apparent Secret

During research about coats of arms I came across the village of Emmelsum in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. According to Wikipedia it doesn't have any places of interest. Even Emmelsums own website states, that there is not much to say about it. This film is an attempt at a portrait of this village.

DUNKELDEUTSCHLAND (dark Germany) is a derogative term for the part of Germany that was formerly the GDR. It originates from the grey appearance of the east-german cities after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This film visits places in and around the east german city of Halle: the dark wing of the former ORWO factory, the site of a sunken allotment, a sauna, an ale house, a solar park, a floating facility and a german speaking parrot.

Super Unit

Super Unit

SUPERJEDNOSTKA (Polish for Superunit) is a huge block of flats designed as a "housing machine". Up to three thousand people can live on 15 floors of the building. The lifts only stop every three floors so the residents must go through a maze of corridors and stairs in order to get to their flats. The main characters of the documentary are people living in Superjednostka and going through important moments of their lives there. This is where their emotions throb, their expectations engender, and their desires come true... or not. 762 flat doors and 762 stories. We are opening only a few of them.
