Humor is not the only thing used in this program to elicit a smirk. Ecstasy, absurdity, inequality in life and society can also create laughter. Formally very different but through their wit, the films take a position on militarized family relationships, a newt-induced world economic crisis, the death of a friend, domestic work and, last but not least, school. Because sometimes a lot has to be lived through before it can be laughed about.(Sophie Hilbert)
A cry goes through the entire cinema. AAAAH! is an expression of pain, surprise, fear, excitement, anger and unhinged laughter. The cartoon students experience various situations that confront them with harsh realities of society, often in the context of school. In the end, many Aaaahs make for a choir.… >>>
In CHERRY, the documentary film becomes a portrait, because it is so intimately close to the protagonist, Marie-Lise Chouinard. We're there when she takes a trip to the lake, meets her friends in the park, at the hair-dresser, but also during her daily medical treatments and the moments during which she speaks about her own death. The open personality of the protagonist grants an intimate insight, accompanied by her radiant laughter and a deeply friendly way of filmmaking.… >>>

The protagonists in THE NEWT CONGRESS are newts. The large, slimey salamanders animated by puppetry lurch through the ponds on the sidelines of a conference. The scene is based on Karel Čapek's "The War with Newts" and creates a link to our reality to discuss economic exploitation and animal-human relations.… >>>

At the scrapyard, Hsin-Yu Chen and Jessi Ali Lin force the digger and the forklift to do chores. Eggs are scrambled, dishes are washed, laundry is hung up, and a smartphone break is taken in ever-same sequences. These tasks not being done by a woman but by heavy construction machinery is a derivation from Martha Rosler's "Semtiotics of the Kitchen." The filmmakers reproduce the flat filming of work from this 1975 feminist artwork and complement it with an absurd change of rolls.… >>>

Jani and her new friend Kiefer, a talking fish, are on flight through Jani's home. Because the family is ruthless, dystopian-colorfully beam the drowning industrial waste and nuclear power plants in the background. A secret order is also pursuing both. The short film employs surreal means driven by unbridled imagination, as does the protagonist Jani, to break free.… >>>
