Golden Hercules

Regional Competition

The competition for the Golden Hercules is open to all formats and genres that can be presented on screen. The prize, sponsored by Machbar GmbH, a corporate communications agency with its headquarters in Kassel, is endowed with 3,500€.

Eligible for the regional competition are works:  

  • whose directors reside in North Hesse, or
  • whose directors are studying at the University of Kassel, the Kunsthochschule Kassel, or a comparable media institution in North Hesse, or
  •  which were realized and produced in Northern Hesse.  

Out of all the films shown in the section Golden Hercules, a jury nominates a selection for the Golden Hercules award. It is possible for an outstanding documentary work from the section Golden Hercules to be nominated for the Golden Key competition, or rather the Golden Key award. From the 34 films in this year's Hercules program, 19 works are nominated.

Jury 2022

Joey Arand works at the intersection of contemporary art and film. Her films have been screened at many festivals, such as the GoEast, the LICHTER Film Fest or the Max Ophüls Preis. She has exhibited her artistic works at Grimmwelt Kassel and Hinterconti Hamburg, among others. In 2017, she resided as a scholarship holder at the Künstlerkolonie Willingshausen, in 2019 at the "Cité des Arts" on la Réunion Island. Since 2018, she has been working as a lecturer at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. In 2021 she won the Golden Hercules at the Kassel Dokfest with her film “La sorsier kabiné”.

Clemens Camphausen is one of three managing directors of Machbar GmbH, creative strategist, presentation don, bread baker, NES-Tetris DAS player (588K NTSC, 526K PAL), father, husband, man of honor.

Stefanie Kreuzer is Professor of “German Literature and Media Studies” at the University of Kassel. Since 2018, she has been the organizer of the Kassel Grimm Poetics Professorship (GPP) and initiator of the accompanying film series in cooperation with director Thomas Henke. Her research interests include (film)narratology; intertextuality and intermediality; dreamlike narration in literature, film, and visual arts; fantastic storytelling, realism and postmodernism.

Mariska Lief is a freelance journalist and filmmaker. For Hessischer Rundfunk and ARD, she produced the documentary series “Dichtung und Wahrheit – Wie Hip Hop nach Deutschland kam” and “Techno House Deutschland – Im Club”. She also works regularly for various reportage and cultural formats such as “7 Tage”, “ttt - titel, thesen, temperamente" and “arte twist”.

Martin Schmidl is an artist and art scholar and, since 2021, rector of the Kunsthochschule Kassel. The curator, designer and publicist works self-organized and in cooperation with institutions such as the Westfälisches Landesmuseum Münster, the Haus der Kunst Munich or the History Science Centre in Muscat, Oman.

Publications include: Handwirtschaft. Adolf Hölzel (2019), Zeichnen (2015), Postwar Exhibition Design. Displaying Dachau (2010). Exhibitions including: Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Apex Art New York, Neue Galerie Graz.
