The Great Outdoors

Powerful natural phenomena have always had a special place in cinema. Already early on in film history, cameras were taken on mountain tours, aquatic and other excursions and since then impressive landscapes have become way more than mere scenery. But what has become of us and nature in the meantime? How has nature changed, how has our view? This program shows a variety from the apocalyptic scenario of post nature and the staging of an alpine tamer to a mountain film in its original sense and closes with a question: is at least the sublime still what it used to be?

Somnium

Somnium

Snow, sea, moon. Basalt stones, crane arms, swarms of machines. The land filling project Maasvlakte 2 at the Rotterdam haven provides the images for Rosa Barba’s science fiction film SOMNIUM. Based on interviews with locals and people involved with the project, she shows a futuristic scenario for the artificially new land.

The Chief

The Chief

Monte Bettogli, Carrara: People and machines at a marble mine. IL CAPO (The Chief) coordinates the workers and heavy machinery with a language, only consisting of gestures and signs. Like a maestro he conducts his grand orchestra of heavy stones and construction machines in front of the idyllic panorama of the Apuan Alps. A noisy work creating paradox silence.

The White Gold and Other Tales

The White Gold and Other Tales

At 3.000 meters high, a battalion of alpine troops prepares for a dangerous attack. Each huge spike of rock climbed, from the valley bottom to the highest peaks, represents a step towards the beginning of the fight. The ruins of a village rise on the lake floor: houses are scraped walls by now, they only serve as shelter for the deepest currents under there. Sometimes it seems that a bell, deadened, is ringing. The two young dam wardens carry out their daily duties. The sky is one whole, the mountain another; they both mirror themselves in the green water. At 3.000 meters high each day is the same as the other. Not even the passing of time brings about change.

Encounters with Landscape (3x)

Encounters with Landscape (3x)

A filmmaker heading into nature. Her aim is to experience the sublime, as Kant describes it. Necessary requirements for this are: Sensibility, to have a body, be a human being, be finite. A task in three stages. What seems funny in the beginning, becomes an existential experience – and an audio-visual adventure for the viewer.
