American Gothic

Großes BALi, 00:00 h

A feeling of unease, of uncanniness is spreading throughout the United States of America. Even before the last elections this feeling has infected the tumbling super power’s public discourse. Borrowing from the long tradition of Gothic Horror, these three midnight movies tap into the American state of perturbation. They take winding narrative paths through the nation’s spooky back alleys – post-industrial Berlin, New Hampshire, the legendary Hudson River Valley, or New Orleans after hurricane Katrina – charting the dislodged mood of their country.

Indefinite Pitch

Indefinite Pitch

A hard boiled narrator pitches a film project. The story is set in Berlin, New Hampshire, a formerly thriving industrial town – thanks to the local paper mill – which has succumbed to poverty, crime and drug abuse in recent years. Today the biggest employer in the region is a correctional facility. The planned movie and its story about an arsonist quickly are sidelined as the narrator’s tale takes on increasingly shrill tones – not only the movie is pitched but also the narrator’s voice. Through a montage of still images Kienitz Wilkins constructs a disconcerting, speculative, oftentimes absurdly comical portrait of the US-american periphery, whose desolate polluted landscapes are populated by rassist gangs and drug dealers.

DAT LIKWID LAND

DAT LIKWID LAND

A city after a devastating storm, a notebook from an unknown author, a swamp and over and over: graveyards. Starting from a research on the only book by John Kennedy Toole, the cult classic "A Confederacy of Dunces", the film sets of on a meandering journey through the morbid, moldy New Orleans. The posthumously published book, which only appeared years after Toole’s suicide, and its hero Ignatius act as guides through a disorienting mesh of history, histories and present.
