Waiting for the Punch
A spectacle needs preparation, a successful show needs training and the spectacle itself can sometimes be very inconspicuous. Thrill, ecstasy, action and the structures that make these feelings happen: The program brings together five films about the days, hours, minutes and seconds before the release, when the tension intensifies, reaches its peak, when one can hardly contain oneself, about that feeling in the back of one’s neck when something is approaching, about the quiet before the storm and the storm itself, about holding one’s breath and the hope for the final punch.
One Hour Real
ONE HOUR REAL explores the sets and fronts of a contemporary leisure phenomenon, real-life escape games. These games, in which a group of players has limited time to find the exit to a physical space, originally emerged in Japan, and their popularity among players in Europe has recently increased. ONE HOUR REAL calmly examines the empty, thematically designed, camera monitored rooms: Pharaoh’s tombs, living rooms, basements and factories are waiting for the next countdown.

Confusing Drum
In Belfast the night before July 12th – the annual Protestant celebration – massive bonfires are lit in many Protestant neighborhoods. These towering structures, built months in advance, are mostly made up of wooden pallets and car tires with some reaching over 30 meters. During the days before the Twelfth, young boys guard the construction to prevent Catholics from lighting the bonfires too early.

Explosion ma baby
“It’s August. Feel the suffocating heat of the sun penetrating your skin. All around you, an abundance of flesh is spinning. Thousands of men offer up the naked bodies of baby boys to the angelic icon of San Sebastian. Screams, colours, chants and explosions. Money-garlands. Imagine no women except me. [...] Imagine how badly I fell in love with this. I desperately want to be part of it. [...] But I know that I can’t. And so I try to capture it on film.” Pauline Curnier Jardin

Air
Life is between the first and last breath. If respiration is a vital condition, Aleix Segura seems to contradict logic. He is world champion of static apnea diving, winning the title in 2016 with a time of 9´23´´ submerged in a swimming pool without breathing aid. It is not-breathing, what keeps his heart beating and his blood pulsating. A body lying in the water of a pool, an instant between birth and death. Breathtakingly suspenseful.

Mr Uppercut – How to Be a Champion
How do you become a wrestling star? 27-year old Erkan still lives with his parents in a small flat in Berlin. He loves wrestling and wants to make it to the top league, USA's WWE. A hard path lies ahead of him. Will he have what it takes to be a champion? MR UPPERCUT is highly aware of its protagonist’s performative qualities and lets him address the audience directly. In the style of a true wrestler, self-confident and hyperbolic, he unravels his story for us. A story which seems to fit almost too well into the mold of the well-known tale of the underdog.
