Chongqing has 37 million inhabitants. Included among them are a group of five friends – Sloth, Shrek, Yoyo, Shark and Pomeranian. Together, they are preparing for the coming night. Unnoticed, the radio plays Western pop music and Chinese hits. They smoke and drink as they discuss romance, sex and dark pasts. None of them really know where they are headed. They have no big expectations. But they do have dreams. Sloth’s father won’t acknowledge her existence, and her stepfather is a heroin addict. Pomeranian hasn’t yet got over his parents’ divorce. Sometimes Shrek tries to persuade himself that his positive HIV diagnosis was just a mistake. Shark feels ugly and untalented. And Shrek and Shark are arguing about whether fidelity is possible… Dongwu Yuan is a melancholy look at growing up and the quest for (im)possible forms of love and good fortune. These are the kind of unending conversations that happen by accident, the sort that we have all had already but keep on having –because we can’t find the answers.
