The War Outside

Großes BALi, 15:15 h

In November 1947 Wolfgang Borcherts theatre play 'Draußen vor der Tür' (The War Outside), one of the first post-war dramas that dealt with war and its consequences premiered. Seventy years later it seems like war has returned, at least in the daily news cycle, which is presenting endless images from the world's conflict zones. But this program aims to take a look behind the headlines and focuses on the effects of war on the everyday life of individuals, society and the place, all of which bear the traces of war.

The Separate System

The Separate System

"I don't want people watching the film to think that I don't deserve to be in here" is written on a piece of paper. This note, as well as the film, was produced in a workshop with veterans, held by the filmmaker in a prison in northern England. While the camera captures daily life on Liverpools streets, the men talk about their experiences. But the solitude of their confinement seems to be psychological, as well as physical. Estranged from their time in a war zone, the civil society seems as foreign as prison or military does for us.

Grandmother and Her Indian Milkfungus

Grandmother and Her Indian Milkfungus

Every day the filmmaker's grandmother prepares her beloved Indian milkfungus which makes out of ordinary milk healthy kefir. But just around the corner in the neighboring city of Mariupol a war causes armed fights. Inside her home everything seems peaceful and she hasn't left her flat in a long time. Her dedicated stirring dictates the rhythm of the film and we watch her meditative contemplation about a living organism that transforms matter.

Greetings from Aleppo

Greetings from Aleppo

It has been a few months since photographer Issa Touma has left his home in Aleppo. Now he is returning to check his belongings after an unexploded bomb has landed in his old living room. He uses his trip to meet friends and colleagues, who have struggled to keep up their daily routines amid gun fires and destruction. This contrast between the normalcy of their actions and the heightened state of emergency offers another perspective on life in Aleppo which hardly appears on the news. Surviving is often highly surreal and touching in this warn-torn city.

Dogs

Dogs

It is nighttime at the Israeli-Palestinian border. In the shadows of barbed fences, gates and watchtowers, a pack of dogs is searching for food. They roam around the deserted stretch of land and freely cross the highly disputed borders. Unimpressed by the tension and violence surrounding them, the dogs have their own, unpredictable agenda. The film focuses on the dogs and the dynamics of the pack, as they freely move through the highly regulated architecture humans have created.

Meryem

Meryem

His deceased sister had served with Meryem, which is how Reber Dosky could convince her to be part of the project. The film takes us straight into the heart of the battle of Kobani in Northern Syria. Meryem is now the commander of the Kurdish forces fighting ISIS in the destroyed city. Without further framing, Dosky portrays a group of women, which are leading the fight for freedom and the costs of the battle.
