Home Stories

Großes BALi, 16:00 h

In which conditions are we living? HOME STORIES brings films together, which are pulling this question. They do this with an understanding of buildings, places and streets as living and lively matter. They check them for their political and social foundation, shake them, dig deeper and demand improvements. In order to do so the filmmakers place images in relation to each other. And thereby reveal how flexible the seemingly stiff social and material constructions can be.

Stand-by Office

Stand-by Office

The video introduces a group of people within an office building. As an inventory of everyday office work gestures, we see among others a receptionist on the phone, a man in his office sorting files, a work meeting ... Gradually unusual new situations occur and change our relationship to this common space.

Construction Lines

Construction Lines

An 'iceberg home' is a home where the sub-ground levels are larger than the house above. CONSTRUCTION LINES portraits an iceberg home, which was not developed due to hundreds of objections from surrounding neighbors in Knightsbridge, West London. The film shows this iceberg home rendered as a 3D model, using the original architectural plans and the modelling software Sketchup. The narrative of the film, the model of the home, and the scenes played out within it, are informed by the objections filed against the planning application, as well as online articles speculating about the lives and lifestyles of the super-rich.

Images, I See Symptoms no Reflexions*

IMAGES, I SEE SYMPTOMS NO REFLEXIONS* was shot in Berlin's Gropius Stadt. The housing project was built between 1962-75 and was stigmatized soon after as a 'socially troubled area'. Today again Gropius Stadt subjekt of a particular attention valuing the cultural heritage of modernism. And soon probably the too well-known mechanisms of urban displacements will start. The film juxtaposes drone footage, which bring to mind popular shots from contemporary music videos, with a text citing authors like Lucia Berlin, Joan Didion und Chris Kraus. It voices the physiological and psychological social symptoms of our times.

Two

Two

Conceived at the same time as an architectural study and a detective story, Due was shot in Milano 2, a residential area located just outside Milano. Built as a utopian city by Silvio Berlusconi between 1970 and 1979, Milano 2 was his first ambitious real estate project. In Milano 2 the first private Italian TV channel was born, and became the bridgehead of the media and later political empire of Berlusconi. Milano 2, which may now seem at first sight an anonymous peripheral neighborhood, has functioned as a laboratory for a way-of-life that, in the decades of the “Berlusconismo”, was spread nationally and turned Italian culture upside down.
