Internal Security
“German Angst” is not what it used to be. The rise of right-wing extremism is fueled by an agitational rhetoric of fear and the digital hysteria of social media. The NSU trial has revealed deeply rooted structural racism, but not the actual circumstances of the murder series. How can one take a position in such a political atmosphere? And how can it be articulated without blundering into the escalative swirls of polarisation? Four films that take a stand, assessing the precarious state of the nation with clear focus and level-headed analysis.
Depth of Field
A flower stand, a tailor shop, a snack car: three places in the German city Nuremberg that became crime scenes when the “National Socialist Underground” (NSU), a far-right terrorist group, murdered three independent business owners with migrant backgrounds between 2000 and 2005. DEPTH OF FIELD explores the abysmal depth of these racially motivated crimes by orbiting the crime scenes with a camera whose axis repeatedly tilts and tips out of the frame. Descriptions of ordinary scenes and encounters are interweaved with compressed fragments of information from racist media coverage and murder investigations. These investigations were without exception directed against the victims themselves and their family members, until the NSU eventually committed to the murders; their circumstances still remain unresolved.

A Bar on Majorca
Eine Demonstration der NPD auf einem Super-8 Film, etwa 30 Jahre nach Ablaufdatum belichtet, liefert uns die Bildebene dieses experimentellen Essays. Auf der Tonebene streift der Autor das NPD-Verbotsverfahren, die AfD und ihre modernen Formen der Kommunikation, die Nachfrage nach analogem Foto- und Filmequipment, nach Vinylschallplatten und nach regionalen Bioprodukten, um am Ende wieder zum dem ehemaligen NPD-Vorsitzenden Holger Apfel zurückzukommen, der seit seinem Ausstieg aus der rechten Szene eine Bar in Palma de Mallorca betreibt.

Weil ich nun mal hier lebe
An excerpt from an interview with a young woman that was recorded after the racist arson attacks of Mölln (1992) and Solingen (1993), in which eight persons were murdered and many others severely injured. SPOTS regards aesthetics as political action. These aesthetics counter the dominant visual politics and their fixation on the perpetrators as well as the media’s disinformation about the NSU complex. They reverse what is visible, represent gestures of resistance, and formulate questions and accusations. In doing so, they seek to initiate a wider debate within society.

At the same time, there is a deluge of weather tropes on the internet, on television and in the press: Shit storms, data flood, refugee waves. Language, metaphors and images are instruments of control. They are used to dispel - and instill - fear. How does the image function as a document, as fiction, trophy, counterattack? How close are manipulation and prediction? Is the weather still real?
