Soldier
A young man decides to join the army. He becomes the drummer in the military band, and his everyday life is now a combination of military training and music. What does the Argentine Army do these days, more than thirty years after the dictatorship? What does it mean to be a soldier in a country without wars? // The army as a great mise en scène, almost like fiction. I live across the street from the barracks where I shot the movie. Every time I walked by, I’d stare behind the bars at that parallel world. A caged city where everyone wore the same uniform and followed the same rules, almost like a prison. I’ve always felt curious about how the military have to construct a character for the outside world, like a huge staging where thousands of people have to act for one another. It made me wonder about how we present our- selves in everyday life, about the performative aspects of human interaction. Who are these people behind the uniforms?
