Urban Bodies

Großes BALi, 13:15 h

In cities things convene that don’t belong together. Diversity and multiplicity – not as a normative concept but as a consequence of a place where everything happens simultaneously, where not just dissent but indifference can prevail. In cities it’s above all foreign entities that come together, writes sociologist Armin Nassehi. This tension, which has especially influenced societal development in the 20th century, is the focus of this program. The program is part of a exchange project between the Werkleitz Festival 2017 “No more, not yet” and the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Fest.

The Seaweed in Your Hair

The Seaweed in Your Hair

Excerpts from a diary, a pop song, and a poetry reading shared with passersby in the hollowed-out streets of Athens: Daphné Hérétakis’ film is an ode to Athens and its inhabitants immediately after the Greek bailout referendum in July 2015. It proves that beauty and hope can be found in times of crisis.

Body Trail

Body Trail

The human body as tool for experiencing spatial dimensions. Body sculptures change and adapt to the environment, creating new perspectives into architecture and the city: a conceptual filling of empty urban spaces. BODY TRAIL is based on the outdoor performance “Bodies in Urban Spaces” – choreographed by Willy Dorner and premiered at Festival Quartier d`été in Paris in July 2007 –, which was repeated in Vienna at night and filmed by Michael Palm.

From the West

From the West

FROM THE WEST opens with the children's question of what “the West” means beyond a cardinal direction, then it goes on to retrace how the West, as a model of society, inscribed itself in the Federal Republic of Germany's post-war history. Unidentified city views and modern architecture, drives on the highway and through suburbs and industrial zones alternate with the interiour of a single-family home being cleared out. The film's search movements shift to passed-down memories of a time when the parents of the filmmaker were members of a 1970s communist splinter group.
