Leisure Industrial Complex

Großes BALi, 20:00 h

A look behind the scenes of the entertainment industry. Creating a spectacle for an audience is hard work. May it be the exotic jungle nights in a German zoo, a Carneval on the Bahamas or a tourist town on the Brazilian coast. The films in the program not only question who is staging what, but also the cultural and historical implications of this representation. When the professional athletes raise their fists in protest, it is obvious that this is more than just entertainment.

A green brown landscape shimmers through veils of snow, irritating and strangely two-dimensional, resembling a stage backdrop that serves as the static background for a vaporous curtain billowing in the foreground. Whirled about by strong gusts of wind, the snowfall assumes ever changing patterns. A playful commentary about artificially and artistically altered environments, reporting on the relation of nature to culture and commenting on their staging.

Shake up Brazil

Shake up Brazil

The coastal city of Porto Seguro holds historical significance for Brazil, as it was here where the first Portugese ships landed in 1500. Today, most visitors are tourists, enjoying the beaches. The young people in town work as host, dancers and guides. But the continuing historical contradictions of the country’s colonial period still come to light every day.

a continental feast for the eyes and the ears

a continental feast for the eyes and the ears

It is night-time in Hangenbecks zoo. Despite the darkness, there is no silence. Set to the sound of African music, the nocturnal spectacle of the 'jungle nights' attracts onlookers and visitors, while keeping the animals awake. This staging of the exotic, taking place roughly one hundred years after the exhibitions of humans at the zoo, is captured on screen as sensuous feast for the eyes and the ears.

Junkanoo Talk

Junkanoo Talk

Junkanoo is a yearly parade on the Bahamas, which originated hundreds of years ago when slaves on the plantations celebrated the Christmas holidays. Today it is a big parade with dancers, music and costumes which are awarded official prizes. But the historical meanings and implications must still be questioned. Who has the right to speak about a given culture?

Cleaning the Glass

Cleaning the Glass

Donald Trump's criticism of football players, who choose to kneel during the national anthem is only the latest chapter in the discussion surrounding sports and politics. In his video essay, Brett Kashmere explores the relationship between protests, race and media in the American sports leagues. By combining TV reports, fan reactions, images and gestures, this documentary offers an inside into a divided society where political conflicts have long entered the stage of sports stadiums.
